Machine translation: The use of computers with databases of bilingual or multilingual terminology and software algorithms for conversion of syntax between languages. There are two basic schools of MT technology, rules-based and examples-based. The first stresses the structure of languages, looking for things in common. One rule system translates a source language into an intermediate language, then uses standard rules to create the target language version. Examples-based systems attempt to compile vast numbers of usage examples, and then match the source text with the closest and most common match in the target language.

Translation memory: A translation memory (TM) is a database consisting of a set of segments (phrases or sentences) in a source language, with the corresponding translation of each segment in the target language. A translation memory is built from previous translations of a document or series of documents. This is the second step provided by a CAT (computer-assisted translation) tool, the first one being the segmentation.

Mémoire de traduction: La mémoire de traduction est une banque de données dans laquelle sont enregistrés, sous forme d'unités de traduction, un texte source et le texte cible correspondant. Cette mémoire à la base des logiciels de TAO permet de retrouver automatiquement les passages déjà traduits, ou de repérer les passages modifiés, qu'elle soumet alors au traducteur pour mise à jour.
